There has been news buzzing with the supposed benefits of salt therapy or halotherapy for lung conditions like COPD and asthma. But what exactly is salt therapy, and is it helpful or harmful?

Adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH) is a frequent cause of upper airways obstructive syndromes associated to middle ear and paranasal sinuses disorders, swallowing and voice disorders, sleep quality disorders, and occasionally facial dysmorphisms. ATH treatment is essentially based on a number of medical-surgical aids including nasal irrigation with topical antibiotics and corticosteroids and/or treatment with systemic corticosteroids, immunoregulators, thermal treatments, adenotonsillectomy, etc.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is primarily characterized by airway remodeling and inflammation. The inhalation of cigarette smoke exacerbates inflammation, oxidative stress, and pyroptosis. While halotherapy has demonstrated its ability to alleviate airway secretions and enhance drainage, the precise mechanism remains to be elucidated. In this research, we examined the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant impacts of halotherapy in rats with COPD, delving into the underlying mechanisms.
